Day of dominoes, bingo puts wrap on recreation department's year

Too scared to brave the malls this weekend? Parents and children alike will have something new and entertaining to do Saturday, thanks to the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

The city of Huntsville's Parks and Recreation Department will host bingo and dominoes at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center on Saturday.

Bingo will start at 8:30 a.m. and will last until noon. Bingo is open to children ages 5 to 18. Doors will open for domino players at 6 p.m.. and tournament play will last until around 8:30 p.m. Players ages 14 and up are admitted for the tournament.

"We lowered the age on the domino tournament this year, so youth who are good domino players are allowed to participate," recreational services superintendent Patrick Antwi said. "This domino tournament is open to anyone aged 14 and up, so nearly everyone can participate."

A new twist to the annual tournament is the addition of a new game called "Hold Your Man."

"This game is similar to regular dominoes, but it's a one-on-one game. You can't have partners," Antwi said. "We're inviting anyone within the city who knows how to play this game to come to this tournament.

"I've heard that you have to be pretty skilled to play this game, so anyone who understands this game and is up to the challenge is encouraged to attend," he said. "We hope anyone who understands 'Hold Your Man' will come and try to help us out."

The tournament is the final program sponsored by the department in 2003.

"This will conclude our activities for the year and we'll start with other programs in January," Antwi said. "It's toward the end of the year, near Christmas, so it's time to get together with friends.

"It's relaxing to unwind and enjoy bingo and dominoes," he said. "You can get away from the rush of the season. We want to get closer for fellowship and we invite everyone to join us."

Antwi said if more people show people, the event will be more fun for everyone involved.

"We hope to get a large crowd so everyone can have a good time. These are good games for kids and adults," Antwi said. "As an added incentive, there will be prizes for winners and light refreshments served to everyone."
