(Columbia-AP) Feb. 20, 2004 - Former Governor David Beasley opposes the Catawba Indian Nation's plans for high-stakes bingo in Santee. But, a top member of Beasley's US Senate campaign is a business partner involved in the tribe's plans.

Beasley said earlier this week Carroll Campbell III will help manage his campaign for the nomination to the US Senate seat Democrat Ernest Hollings is giving up next year. Campbell is the son of former Governor Carroll Campbell.

The younger Campbell is a senior vice president for Southern Property Management Incorporated of Myrtle Beach. That corporation hopes to operate and share profits from the bingo hall tribal leaders want to open in Santee.

Beasley says Campbell is aware of Beasley's opposition to all gambling. Campbell says he admires Beasley's courage.
